In 2006 Hybrid Energy Solutions Limited was established with the goal of revolutionising the way the telecom sector managed and consumed power for remote/off-grid telecom towers. Transforming the sector from 100% fossil fuel and introducing solar power and lithium-ion battery storage as primary power sources Hybrid developed the most efficient solutions in the market globally.

12 years on and HYbrid has accumulated over 40 million operating hours of hybrid generation on more than 2000 sites. HYbrid continues setting standards for cost-effective, greener solutions for power generation and storage.

HYbrid’s solutions are now adapted to suit a wide range of applications from small microgrid to grid scale multi-megawatt energy storage systems providing grid stability to support renewable power generation.

Executive Team

Nick McGrath Chief Executive Officer

Nick graduated from Waterford Institute of Technology with a post graduate diploma in Business. Previously Nick was director of GE Energy & GE Wind Energy Ireland where he ran a rentals business involved in power generation. During his career at GE Nick was involved in projects as diverse as providing all the temporary power for the Olympics in Athens & Winter Olympics in Torino to installing multi megawatt gas turbines for emergency power projects in Europe.

Jeffrey Stone Director

Jeffrey B. Stone is a private investor, experienced corporate executive and board member, with expertise in power generation, logistics, commercial aviation, and information technology. Jeff is a co-founder and until 2011 served on the board of APR Energy, which specializes in “fast-track” power plant installation and operation to meet emergency, seasonal and longer-term electricity needs.

Stephen Means Member, Board of Directors

A career which began in sales for IBM – Systems Division, moved to the startup of two airlines: PEOPLExpress Airlines and Presidential Airways. Specifically, with Presidential Airways, Mr. Means was the executive responsible for the airline’s service operation. Leaving Presidential Airways, Mr. Means spent 25 years contributing to the growth of an aviation communications and systems engineering company – ARINC, INC. He served as the Chief Marketing Officer and Executive and Corporate Officer for Aviation Solutions Business Unit. The company’s largest and fastest growing as well as most profitable business unit. He earned both a Master’s degree and undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina System.

Irene Walsh Managing Director

Irene is a qualified Certified Accountant FCCA with over 20 years’ experience at senior management level across a range of SMEs in a number of diverse industries. Previously she has worked in the Financial Services sector with Merrill Lynch Capital Markets Bank in Dublin and with TD Waterhouse Stockbrokers in Sydney. Irene is highly proficient in strategic planning, financial analysis, financial modelling and management information systems. She has a particular interest in sustainability, green energy and community power.

Alan Smyth Chief Technology Officer

Holding an MSc in Mechanical Engineering from Trinity College, Dublin, Alan’s career started out in Research and Development. Subsequently moving to the Power Generation sector, Alan gained experience project managing multi-megawatt power generation projects, along with the design and system integration of such projects.

Alan leads HYbrid’s long term technology vision, while building relationships with key technology partners and overseeing the details of HYbrid’s product design.

Lalith Gunawardena Business Development Director

Lalith started his career in power generation in Sri Lanka in 1997, where he managed sales and service of generators and utility scale emergency power projects. Since moving to USA and completing his MBA in 2006, he has been managing the sales, support and distribution of leading brands of diesel generators and associated equipment from FG Wilson, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, ASCO and other leading equipment manufacturers in the Caribbean and Latin America.

Conor O’Neill Project Manager

On joining the engineering team at HYbrid Energy Conor has become an invaluable asset in the administrative, technical and design sides of the company. Conor has project managed over 800 off-grid sites throughout Africa. Conor holds a BEng in Energy Management and BSci in Electrical Design, and has over 15 years’ experience in working in the electrical industry.

Shane O’Keeffe Energy Engineer

Shane graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Energy Engineering from University College Cork. With previous experience with UCC’s Energy department and Dell EMC, Shane heads up HYbrid’s automation team and brings key technical skills to the engineering department. He plays a vital role in deployment and commissioning of Hybrid units across the globe.
